D. Merle Thompson, 85, of Sandwich, Illinois, formerly of Jackson, MN, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at his son and daughter-in-law's home, surrounded by his loving family.
Merle was born on July 21, 1935 in Windom, MN, the son of Earl and Ruby (Wilson) Thompson.
On September 9, 1956, he was united in marriage to Catherine Jane Geesman. They made Jackson their home, where they had three children, Rick, Rob, and Cindy. Merle and Cathy celebrated 58 years of marriage, before Catherine's death on Dec. 31, 2014.
Merle was a member of The United Methodist Church. He was a 50 yr. member of The Jackson American Legion, and a lifelong volunteer of The Jackson Fire Department. He served in the Army National Guard and was Honorably Discharged from the Armed Forces of the USA on April 1961. Merle enjoyed fishing and hunting. He especially loved spending time at his lake home, with his family.

Six Great-grandchildren, Sister-in-law, Carolyn Geesman, Brother-in-law, Marvin Appel, Good friend, Audrey Chonko
Merle was preceded in death: By his wife, Catherine Thompson, Granddaughter, Jennifer Bettin, Parents: Ruby (Wilson) Thompson, Earl and Iola (Bagley) Thompson. In-Laws: Virgil and Helen (Perkins) Geesman, Sisters: Jurene Roslansky and Juanita Appel, Brother-in-laws: Guy Geesman and Raymond Roslansky, Daughters-in-law: Marcia Thompson, Diane Thompson.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Jackson, at a later date. Osterberg Funeral Home, Jackson, will graciously assist with these arrangements.
