Gary Lee Meier

Gary Meier, age 80, of Lakefield, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Windom, Minnesota. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022, at Hegre Cemetery near Madison, Minnesota with Pastor Kendall Stelter officiating.

Gary Lee Meier, son of Leonard and Angeline (Gronewold) Meier, was born on Monday, October 9, 1941, in Worthington, Minnesota. Leonard was killed in the line of duty on Leyte Island in October 1944. Angeline remarried to John “Jack” Peterson in December of 1950. Gary attended school in Round Lake, and later received his GED while in the Marines. Gary was united in marriage to Sandra Lund on March 8, 1963, in Carlsbad Union Church in Carlsbad, California.  Growing up Gary helped his stepfather Jack, with farm work. Gary then enlisted into the United States Marine Corp, graduating bootcamp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, in San Diego in June 1961. He proudly served for 11 years, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1972. While living in Granite Falls, Minnesota, Gary signed up with the Army Reserve. He was with the reserves for approximately 15 years. He had a hand full of jobs during that time, most of them involving mechanic work. While Gary and Sandra lived in Round Lake, he worked at the reserve center warehouse in Worthington. In 1986, Gary decided to join the active reserves, being stationed in New York twice, and Missouri during this time. Gary moved to Lakefield, Minnesota in 1995. On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, Gary passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Windom, at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 13 days.

Gary is survived by his son Shane Meier; stepbrothers Nick and Max Peterson; stepsister Vickie Peskey; relatives Rosie Gronewold, and Donelle Kingsley; brothers in law Wayne and Michael Lund; sister-in-law Linda (Dick) Cournoyer; in laws Jeff Olson, Gail Horton, Janice Olson, and Danny Olson, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his wife Sandy, parents Leonard Meier and Angeline Peterson, stepfather Jack Peterson, stepsister Janet Riesberg, in-laws Brenda Lund, Michael Lund Jr., and Chad Lund; and relatives Jerry Gronewald, Francis Meier, and Peter Gronewald.
