Helen Lee Smith, daughter of George and Iva (Ruby) Matzke, was born on Sunday, August 22, 1943, in Windom, Minnesota. Helen attended and graduated from Storden High School in 1962. Upon graduation, she moved to Worthington to attend trade school for beautician. Helen married Dennis Fredrickson on July 6, 1963. She remained living in Worthington after Dennis passed away. Helen was united in marriage to Kenneth Smith on June 28, 1969, at the First Baptist Church in Worthington. Following their marriage, they lived in Worthington, until moving to Lakefield in 1972, where they made their forever home.  Ken and Helen were blessed with 2 children Doug and Carmen. While Helen’s main focus was staying home with the children, she also worked alongside Ken at the Dairy Herd Improvement Association for 34 years. Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakefield. Helen passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at the Sanford Medical Center in Jackson, at the age of 78 years, 5 months, and 21 days.

Helen was quite active in the community. She was involved in the DAV, helped with the local Blood mobile, delivered meals on wheels, and was a member of the American Legion. Helen always had a smile on her face, and a friendly Hello, when you met her on the streets. In Helen’s earlier years, she was on a bowling team, at the local bowling alley. She enjoyed playing cards, coffee time, and chatting with friends. Above all Helen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Helen will be greatly missed by her family, and friends.

Helen is survived by her children Doug Smith and Carmen Evers; grandchildren Heidi, Whitney, and Elijah Evers; a great-grandchild; brothers Lyle (Kathy) Matzke and Gary (Cresia) Matzke; sister Lillian (Harold) Dick, along with many great friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents George and Iva; husband Dennis Fredrickson and Kenneth Smith, and a sister Joan Temmeus.

Blessed be the memory of Helen Lee Smith.
