Laurence “Larry” Vacek, age 91 of Jackson, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the Sanford Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023 at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Russ Steele officiating. Military honors by Jackson American Legion Posts 130, will follow the service outside of the funeral home. Burial will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Laurence Albert Vacek, son of Albert and Clara (Hayek) Vacek, was born on July 31, 1931, in Jackson, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Graduating in 1949, Laurence then served the National Guard from 1951-1953. In 1954, Laurence married Emma Nelson, they were blessed with two children, Kathleen and Mark. In 1960, relocating to California,” Larry,” later married Lorene Frank in 1969, gaining four step children, Jerry, Terry, Emery, and Mary. “Larry,” worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier until his full retirement. Early 2000’s, Laurence moved back to Jackson to help care for his mother, Clara.
Laurence was friendly, caring and reserved. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, fishing and wildlife. While a plane enthusiast, farming was Laurence’s passion. With his heart of gold, and dependable dedication, “Larry” served his country, family, friends, and even strangers. Laurence’s smile, caring nature, and love will be greatly cherished by his family and friends forever.
On Wednesday, January 25th, 2023, Laurence passed away, peacefully, at the age of 91.
Laurence is survived by his daughter Kathleen Gruhlke of Iowa; Step children Jerry of Idaho, Terry, Emery, and Mary of California; 30+ step grandchildren and great grandchildren combined; Kathleen’s mother Emma Simmering, along with many other relatives and friends.
Laurence is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Clara, son Mark Vacek, brother Raymond Vacek, son-in-law Douglas Gruhlke, ex-wife Lorene Scott, a step grandson, and a step-great-grandson.
