Leland Werner Obituary

Leland "Pete" Werner, 93 of Jackson, entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Jackson. A private family memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Eunice Woodberry officiating.

Burial with full Military rites will be held following the service at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Petersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Leland “Pete” Werner was born on November 19, 1926 to Edward and Ella (Ullrich) Werner in Petersburg Township, Jackson, County, Minnesota. He was baptized on March 3, 1927 at the parsonage of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Petersburg. As a kid he was involved in 4-H and one year showed the grand champion steer. On July 22, 1949 he was married to Marian Ann Zahorsky in the parsonage of Bethany Lutheran Church in Bergen. Pete served in the U.S. Army in active duty in the war in Korea in the Search Light division from February 1952 to November 1953 when he was honorably discharged. He worked for Ellefson/Werner farms after returning from Korea; he worked for DeKalb and he was clerk/carrier/supervisor for over 30 years at the Jackson Post Office. Bowling, bingo, and horseshoeing filled his free time. He won a boat in a bowling tournament in 1960. He was commander of the American Legion Club in Jackson from 1960-1961 and served as their finance officer for at least 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Drum Corp and Color Guard. Pete was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the church council as a trustee and vice-president. Pete learned how to make caramel corn from his friend Lucky Jasper and made many batches of the delicious caramel corn on Saturday nights at the races. One night he made 60 batches!! Pete drove the VA van to Sioux Falls weekly taking veterans to their doctor appointments. Pete & Mazie were 2010 Outstanding Senior Citizens recognized at the fair that year. Pete worked at the fair in the Fish & Wildlife Exhibit. He was a kind, loving and caring man and his smile will be missed by all!

Leland is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marian (Mazie); children Vicki Smith, Michael (Dorie) Werner; grandchildren: Kasey (Charlie) Wellinghoff; Joshua Werner, Megan (Owen Dube) Werner, Adam (Courtney) Werner, Steven (Kristin) Hoffbauer, Justin (Jennie) Hoffbauer and great-grandchildren: Zowie, Nathaneal, and Kailynn Werner; Avah, Ashton, and Cameren Werner, Evie Hoffbauer, Azalee, Ayralin, Alaiha, and Lily Hoffbauer; brother Orie (Lois) Werner, sister-in-law Violet Jessen, along with many nieces and nephews.

Leland is preceded in death by his parents Ed and Ella Werner, brother and sister-in-law Ronald and Mary Ann Werner; sisters and brothers-in-law, Laverne and Dorman Beseke, Marcie and Vernon Libra, Lila and Bob Warwick; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Theodore Zahorsky, Art and Ginny Zahorsky, Walt and Esther Foth, Alfred Jessen, Alice and Herb Krueger, Rose and Harvey Beuthien, Philameane and John Kuhn and son-in-law Art Smith
