Luella Edna Jones

Luella Jones, age 97, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Vista Prairie at Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont.

Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers. donations may be given to Salem Lutheran Church of Jackson, Jackson Cemetery Association or the Jackson Public Library.

Luella (Rieken) Jones was born in Jackson County on September 30, 1926, the daughter of George A. and Luella (Hausfeld) Rieken. Her mother passed away shortly after her birth, leaving Luella and her one-year-old sister, Mildred, to care of their father and a wonderful, loving, grandmother Harmine (Hasbargen) Rieken, who also was raising 2 other cousins, Lawrence Johnson, and Ruth Bressler. They became a very close-knit family. Luella was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church. She received her education in the Jackson Public Schools where she excelled in music and the arts. Upon graduation she attended St. Olaf College and then the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester. During her training she was in surgery under the son of Dr. Charles Mayo, but her passion was working with the babies in pediatrics. While in Rochester Luella served as a Cadet Nurse during WWII. After the war ended, she returned to Jackson to marry her lifelong love, Verlon Jones. On April 17, 1947, they were wed at Salem Lutheran Church. She and Verlon made their home on the family farm outside of Jackson where they raised their 4 children.

Luella loved the outdoors and she kept herself busy with the farm, raising 4 kids, and the many pets they acquired. There were cats, dogs, horses, and even a goat, to name a few, that were blessed with her loving care.

Luella always found time to serve with her church family anyway that they needed her, such as teaching, choir director, ladies aid, circle and was sometimes a soloist accompanied on the piano by her sister, Mildred. She made many dear friends while at Salem.

In later years, she and Verlon retired to a second home in Fairmont, where they lived until 2017, when they moved into Goldfinch Assisted Living. Verlon passed away shortly thereafter. Luella passed away peacefully in her sleep at Goldfinch Assisted Living in Fairmont, Minnesota on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at the age of 97.

Luella is survived by her 4 children, Catherine (Harry) Diamond of Penn Valley, California, Suzanne (Randy) Olson of Jackson, Teresa (Steve) Sathe of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and Vron (Amy) Jones of Rosemount, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren, Cynthia (Dave) Whitesel, Brian Christenson, Paul Sathe, Matthew (Nicole) Sathe, Vincent (Kaitlin) Jones-Muth, and Abigail Jones; 7 great-grandchildren, and extended family, Greg and Kris Diamond and children.
