Merlin Tordsen, 79, of Lakefield, entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Sanford Jackson Medical Center. A visitation will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2020, at the Osterberg Funeral Home is Lakefield. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
Merlin Irl Tordsen, son of Lester and Arlene (Rossow) Tordsen, was born on October 1st, 1940 in the Worthington Hospital. As a child, he attended Lakefield Public Schools and later graduated from Lakefield High School. After completing his education, Merlin worked on the family farm. In 1962, he enrolled in the Minnesota National Guard. In 1966, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Poelaert and was blessed with three children; Wyatt, Jill and Jamie. He worked the family dairy farm until 1986, then began work at Swift in Worthington. In 1992, Merlin married Sharon White and they were blessed with two children; Brandon and Merlin Junior. Merlin worked at Swift for 22 years before retiring in 2015. After retiring from Swift, he worked as a caretaker for the local Rest Stops on I-90, where he enjoyed visiting with travelers. Due to his declining health, he retired from the rest area in 2018. Merlin passed away at the Sanford Jackson Hospital on September 24th, 2020, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 23 days.
Merlin was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith, and he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield. Merlin was a dedicated farmer and enjoyed tending his dairy farm. He enjoyed caring for all types of animals and was especially fond of his dogs, sheep, cats, and each of his 120 dairy cattle, calling each by name. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, taking them fishing and attending their events as they grew up. Merlin was also an avid flower and vegetable gardener; his favorite flower being the amaryllis. He spent many hours watching birds and watching anything and everything sports related. Merlin was a strong, hardworking, compassionate man that enjoyed caring for his family.
Merlin is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sharon; as well as his 5 children, Wyatt (Karla Schwebach) Tordsen, Jill (Brian) Horn, Jamie (April) Tordsen, Brandon Tordsen, and Merlin Tordsen, Jr. Also surviving are his grandchildren Stephanie Tordsen, Emily (Isaiah) Boender, Nathaniel and Josie Horn, Walker, Conner, Sawyer, and Oliver Tordsen. As well as his brother Stanley Tordsen.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Arlene Tordsen, and his brother Dean Tordsen.
