The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Good Samaritan Home in Jackson for providing Phyllis the best possible care for the last nine and a half years. In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the First Presbyterian Church and the Good Samaritan Home in Jackson.
Phyllis’s journey began on June 10, 1930, in Pelican Rapids, the daughter of Howard Harold and Abbie Charlotte (Clark) Phipps. She grew up in Mountain Lake, and upon graduation worked as a nurse’s aide at Midway Hospital in St. Paul. She married Dale Hugunin on March 16, 1951, in St. Paul, and raised four sons, Mike, Steve, Nick and Jeff.
After her divorce, she worked at the Univac (Sperry Corporation) plant in Jackson until its closure; then she worked as a night auditor at the Best Western in Jackson. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She especially enjoyed the company of her grandchildren.
Anyone who came to know Phyllis enjoyed her sense of humor. Among our friends she was known as “the fun mom.” She enjoyed sharing a good joke or two with friends, family, or staff at the Good Samaritan Home. This was her special way of spreading around a little joy.
Phyllis was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. Among her numerous activities she enjoyed reading and hosting informal coffees at her apartment. She made a great urn of farmer’s coffee.
Survivors include her sons Mike Hugunin, Steve (Beth) Hugunin, Nick (Cindy) Hugunin, and Jeff Hugunin; grandchildren Alex Hugunin, Joel (Amanda) Hugunin, Abbie Hugunin, Tyler Hugunin, Grady Hugunin, and Darby (Collin) Vacek, and one great-granddaughter, Parker Hugunin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Genevieve Griffith, her brother Clark, and her daughter-in-law Gina Hugunin.
Blessed be the memory of Phyllis Ann Hugunin.
